About the Author
Dr. Todd R. Clear is a professor specializing in criminal law at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. He is currently involved in research examining the consequences of incarceration, the criminological implications of “place,” and the concept of “community justice.” An extensive writer, Dr. Clear has focused on topics such as correctional classification, prediction systems in correctional programming, community-based correctional strategies, intermediate sanctions, and sentencing policies. He has held leadership positions in numerous professional associations, including the American Society of Criminology and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Dr. Clear has advised public organizations on programming and policy matters in over 40 states and five countries. Furthermore, his contributions have been honored with prestigious awards from various organizations like the American Society of Criminology, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, The Rockefeller School of Public Policy, the American Probation and Parole Association, and the International Community Corrections Association. Dr. Clear has authored 13 books that explore diverse aspects of the justice system, including three books on community justice and one on mass incarceration.
Dr. Michael Reisig is a criminology and criminal justice professor at Arizona State University, having earned his Ph.D. from Washington State University. Before joining Arizona State University, he worked at Michigan State University and Florida State University. Dr. Reisig’s research on corrections has been featured in several prominent criminology journals like Criminology, Crime and Delinquency, Justice Quarterly, and Punishment and Society.
Carolyn Petrosino is a Professor of Criminal Justice and the Founding Chair of the Criminal Justice Department at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts. She completed her Ph.D. at Rutgers University in 1993. Prior to her teaching career, she held various positions within the corrections system of New Jersey. Her published works include articles in journals and chapters in books focusing on topics such as hate crimes, juvenile delinquency, sexual offenders, and parole decision-making. She has contributed to journals like Crime and Delinquency, Journal of Social Issues, Journal of Criminal Justice, Police Quarterly, and Journal of Modern Criminal Justice. Dr. Petrosino’s upcoming book is titled UNDERSTANDING HATE CRIMES: ACTS, MOTIVES, OFFENDERS, VICTIMS, AND JUSTICE (Routledge).
The late George F. Cole was a retired professor of political science at the University of Connecticut. Renowned for his exceptional teaching and research, he earned the prestigious title of fellow of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in 1995. Specializing in the administration of criminal justice, Dr. Cole extensively published on topics such as prosecution, courts, and corrections. He also established and oversaw the graduate corrections program at the University of Connecticut and was a fellow at the National Institute of Justice (1988).
