About the Author

Lynnette Leeseberg Stamler, PhD, RN, FAAN, holds the position of professor and associate dean for academic programs at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, School of Nursing. In the period spanning 1984 to 2012, she was actively involved in teaching at Canadian schools of nursing and also served as a VON nurse prior to embarking on her teaching profession. Stamler completed her BSN at St. Olaf College, Minnesota, pursued her MEd in health education at the University of Manitoba, and obtained her PhD in nursing from the University of Cincinnati. Her research pursuits revolve around patient/health education, diabetes education, nursing education, and quality care. She is engaged with national and international nursing associations, including Sigma Theta Tau International, the Nursing Honor Society, and previously held the presidency of the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing during 2008–2010. She was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in 2011.Lucia Yiu, BScN, BA (University of Windsor), BSc (University of Toronto), MScN (University of Western Ontario), serves as an associate professor within the School of Nursing at the University of Windsor and also functions as an educational and training consultant in community nursing. Yiu has extensive experience working abroad and has actively participated in multiple community and social services committees focusing on local and district health planning. Her professional practice and research encompass multicultural health, international health, experiential learning, community development, breast health, and program planning and evaluation. Yiu received the 2014 Community Health Nurses of Canada Award of Merit.

Aliyah Dosani, RN BN MPH PhD is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Health, Community and Education at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. She holds a PhD from the University of Calgary with a specialization in population/public health. Her nursing practice includes educating students in the Bachelor of Nursing Program, population/public health, community health nursing, and legal issues in nursing. Her research focuses on maternal, newborn, and child health. She is particularly interested in working with vulnerable populations through community-based programs and interventions. She also harbors a keen interest in global health issues.
