About the Author
Larry J. Siegel, Ph.D., was born in the Bronx, New York. While residing on Jerome Avenue and attending City College (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was caught up in the social and political movements of the era. He became fascinated with the impact that contemporary culture had on individual behavior. For instance, did individuals shape society or did society shape individuals? He applied his interest in social influences and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he enrolled in the newly established program in criminal justice at the State University of New York at Albany, where he completed both master’s and doctoral degrees. Dr. Siegel commenced his teaching career at Northeastern University, where he served as a faculty member for nine years. He has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. Subsequently, he taught for 27 years at the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he is currently a professor emeritus. Dr. Siegel has published extensively in the field of crime and justice, covering topics such as juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, criminal justice, courts, corrections, criminal procedure, and policing. Larry, along with his wife Therese and their dog Sophie, currently reside in Naples, Florida, where he continues to write on various subjects and issues in crime and justice. Clem Bartollas, Ph.D., is a sociology professor at the University of Northern Iowa. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Davis and Elkins College, a Bachelor of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, a Master of Sacred Theology from San Francisco Theological Seminary, and a doctorate in sociology with a focus on criminology from Ohio State University. He has taught at Pembroke State University, Sangamon State University, and the University of Northern Iowa, where he has received numerous awards, including Distinguished Scholar, the Donald McKay Research Award, and the Regents’ Award for University Excellence. Dr. Bartollas has authored many articles and over 30 textbooks.
