DAVID F. MARKS hails from Hampshire, England and currently resides in Provence-Alpes-Côte d′Azur, France. Together with his mother, Mary D Marks, David was a founding member of the Movement of Nuclear Disarmament and participated in Aldermaston Marches during the 1960s. Post his education in Portsmouth, David pursued a BSc Honours degree in Psychology at the University of Reading and a PhD at the University of Sheffield. In 1970, he journeyed to New Zealand to engage in work at the University of Otago. He was also privileged to conduct research as a Visiting Professor at the Department of Neurosurgery at Hamamatsu University of Medicine, at Kyushu University in Japan, and at the Universities of Oregon and Washington in the United States. In 1986, David returned to the UK as the Head of the School of Psychology at Middlesex Polytechnic and later as the Head of the Department of Psychology at City, University of London, UK. Apart from the six earlier editions of this publication, David Marks has authored 25 other books, including: The Psychology of the Psychic (1980, 2000), Theories of Image Formation (1986), Imagery: Current Developments (1990), The Stop For Life Programme: An Easier Way to Cease Smoking and Not Start Again (1993), Improving the Health of the Nation (1996), Coping with Dementia: Current European Research (2000), The Health Psychology Reader (2002), Research Methods for Clinical and Health Psychology (2004), Overcoming Your Smoking Habit (2005), Obesity: Comfort vs. Discontent (2016), Stop Smoking Now (2017), A General Theory of Behavior (2018) and Psychology and the Paranormal: Exploring Anomalous Experiences (2020). David is a founding member of the International Society of Critical Health Psychology and Founder Editor of the Journal of Health Psychology and Health Psychology Open. Upon retiring from teaching and journal editing, he now dedicates his time to writing, bird watching, cat observing, photography, and keeping up with the adventures of his four grandchildren.
MICHAEL MURRAY is Emeritus Professor of Social & Health Psychology at Keele University, UK, where he served as the Head of the School of Psychology. Previously, he was Professor of Social & Health Psychology at Memorial University, Canada, and held roles at St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School (King’s College), London, UK and at the Ulster University of Ulster, Northern Ireland. He has also undertaken visiting appointments at Durham University, UK, and Massey University, New Zealand, as well as honorary positions at Staffordshire University, UK, and City, University of London. He has authored numerous books, chapters, journal articles, and reports on various aspects in social and health psychology, with a focus on narrative and participatory methodologies. His previous works include Smoking Among Young Adults (1988, with L. Jarrett, A.V. Swan, and R. Rumen), Qualitative Health Psychology: Theories and Practices (1999, with K. Chamberlain), and Critical Health Directions in Health Psychology (Vols 1–5) (2015); and along with Liz Peel and Carol Holland, Psychologies of Ageing: Theory, Exploration, and Implementation (2018). Michael has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Health Psychology and Psychology and Health, as well as an editorial board member of Health Psychology Open, Health Psychology Review, Psychology, Health and Medicine, and Arts and Health. He chaired the Health Psychology Section of the Canadian Psychological Association, for which he edited the Canadian Health Psychologist/Psychologue Canadien de la Santé, and was a founding member of the International Society of Critical Health Psychology. He holds Fellowships from the British Psychological Society, the Canadian Psychological Association, and the Academy of Social Sciences. In 2017, he was honored as an Honorary Fellow of the British Psychological Society for his innovative qualitative and community-based research. His current research interests include the utilization of participatory and arts-based methodologies to foster social engagement among the elderly.
EMEE VIDA ESTACIO is a certified psychologist, author, public speaker, and health promotion expert. Originally from the Philippines, she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology (magna cum laude) from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, and her MSc and PhD in Health Psychology at City University London. She previously held positions at the University of East London and Keele University. Emee specializes in health promotion and community development and has led action research projects in some of the most marginalized areas in the UK and the Philippines. Engaged as a scholar-activist, she actively supported initiatives for Oxfam, the Association for International Cancer Research, CRIBS Philippines, and Save the Children UK. In addition to prior versions of this work, Emee is also the author of the Psychology in Your Life Book Series (2019), featuring titles such as The Imposter Syndrome Remedy, Transform Your Life for the Better, and Fear is Not My Adversary. Driven by her passions, Emee relocated with her family to Greece to embrace the ‘good life’, where she is now pursuing her vision of establishing a sustainable and health-centric eco-village for the next generation.
