A Brief Introduction to Corrections First Edition by Robert D. Hanser

Robert D. Hanser serves as a professor of criminal justice and heads the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Dr. Hanser holds a doctorate in marriage and family therapy and criminal justice. Additionally, he has earned postgraduate qualifications in psychology (with a focus on psychometrics), counseling, social work, and administration of substance abuse. He is certified nationally as a counselor, licensed as a professional counselor in Louisiana and Texas, accredited as an addiction counselor, a certified hypnotherapist, and an approved anger management therapist. Dr. Hanser has years of experience as a correctional officer at Eastham State Prison in Texas. He has acquired substantial experience in treatment programming in Louisiana at facilities like Richwood Correctional Center (RCC), Madison Parish Correctional Center (MPCC), and the Louisiana Transitional Center for Women (LTCW). His areas of expertise include therapeutic programming, mental health intervention, educational initiatives within correctional institutions, substance abuse treatment, and reentry. He serves as a gubernatorial appointee on the Reentry Advisory Council of Louisiana, sits on the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (LCADV), and has been named to the Professional Educational Counsel with the American Correctional Association (ACA). Dr. Hanser is also an Executive Counselor for the Corrections section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). He previously served as a member of the 4th Judicial District’s Youth Services Planning Board, acted as therapeutic director of the 4th Judicial District Drug Court, and currently leads the therapy programs for the 4th Judicial District Reentry Court and the 4th Judicial District Batterer’s Intervention Program. Furthermore, Dr. Hanser is a surveyor for the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), assisting multiple organizations in obtaining and maintaining CARF accreditation throughout his career, with a particular focus on substance abuse treatment programs and behavioral health.
