About the Authors

Robin Bade was a student at the University of Queensland, Australia, where she secured degrees in mathematics and economics. After teaching high school mathematics and physics, she pursued a PhD at the Australian National University, graduating in 1970. She has held teaching positions at the University of Edinburgh, Bond University, and the Universities of Manitoba, Toronto, and Western Ontario. Her research on global capital flows can be found in the International Economic Review and the Economic Record. Robin commenced teaching economics in 1970 and has been teaching it (together with intermediate macroeconomics and international trade and finance) almost every year since then. The concepts embedded in this text were largely developed during her tutorials with students at the University of Western Ontario.

Michael Parkin studied economics in England and began his career in university-level teaching right after completing his BA at the University of Leicester. He honed his expertise at the University of Essex, considered England’s most dynamic new university of the 1960s, and became a full professor at a young age of 30. He has served as the president of the Canadian Economics Association and has contributed to the editorial boards of the American Economic Review and the Journal of Economic Economics. His research papers on macroeconomics, monetary economics, and international economics have been published in over 160 journals and edited volumes, including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Economic Economics, as well as the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking. He is the author of the well-received textbook, Economics (Pearson), now in its twelfth edition.

Robin and Michael are a couple. Their most significant collaborative work led to the development of the Bade-Parkin Index of central bank independence, sparking extensive research in that field. While they do not take full credit for the independence of the European Central Bank, their pioneering research contributed to the design and promotion of greater independence of central banks globally. Their joint textbooks encompass Macroeconomics (Prentice-Hall), Modern Macroeconomics (Pearson Education Canada), and Economics: Canada in the Global Environment, a Canadian version of Parkin’s Economics (Addison-Wesley). They are committed to the mission of making economics more accessible to an expanding student audience. Their leisure activities include music, theater, art, beach walks, and spending time with their five grandchildren.
