About the Author
Professor Mary Kelly Tate delivers lectures at the University of Richmond Law School, where she undertakes the role of Director of the Law School’s Institute for Actual Innocence – an institution dedicated to recognizing and absolving individuals wrongfully convicted in Virginia by pursuing writs of actual innocence and pertinent post-conviction remedies. Ms. Tate has also labored as an Assistant Public Defender at the Richmond Public Defender’s Office. Operating in private practice as an attorney, she has advocated on behalf of individuals in post-conviction capital and criminal litigation. She completed her B.A. at the University of Kansas and her J.D. at the University of Virginia School of Law. Ms. Tate served as a law clerk for Federal District Judge Robert R. Merhige, Jr. of the Eastern District of Virginia immediately after law school. She frequents national symposiums as a speaker, and she and her pupils actively engage in the reform of public policies. Besides this manuscript, Ms. Tate has contributed articles to various scholarly and popular publications.
