About the Author

Laurence D. Hoffmann November 2011 I see myself as a writer and expositor as well as a mathematician, and these characteristics led to the initial version of this material published in 1975. Before taking my current position as a Senior Investment Management Consultant with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, I was a tenured professor of mathematics at Claremont McKenna College, where, thrice, I was privileged to receive the Huntoon Award for Excellence in Teaching, an accolade for exceptional teaching determined by student votes. Aside from my current profession and my continuous participation in this material, I am part of the Strategic Planning committee of the Claremont Community Foundation and the Investment Committee of the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens in Claremont. My wife, Janice, and I have a passion for traveling, enjoying music and the arts, with two adult sons, three grandchildren, and two Maltese dogs. I am a passionate (albeit average) tennis player, am devoted to the Sunday Puzzle on NPR, and have been making efforts for years to master the Italian language. Many years ago, I earned my BA in mathematics from Brown University and my Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin.

Having obtained my undergraduate degree at Harvey Mudd College and my PhD from Caltech, I became part of the Mathematics Department at Claremont McKenna College, where I have continued to instruct, specializing in calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. I adore writing, and beyond this material, I have written published texts on engineering calculus and linear algebra. My wife, Jaqui, and I actively support recording textbooks for the visually impaired and dyslexic. We make it a point to travel whenever the opportunity arises, with a special fondness for cruising. Among our cherished destinations are Crete, Barcelona, and Singapore. I am a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Lakers, and USC Trojan football, and in my spare time, I write science fiction novels. We have two sons, a newborn grandson, and seven cats, although whether we possess the cats or they own us is a matter of debate. We foster kittens for a local shelter until they are ready for adoption, and indeed, three of our cats were fostered by us before becoming permanent members of our family.

Originally from Cleveland, I commenced college at Bowling Green State University in 1984 majoring in creative writing. Eleven years later, I walked across the graduation stage to receive a Ph.D. in math, a truly unique journey. Following two years at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, I returned home to Ohio, accepting a tenure-track position at the Hamilton campus of Miami University. Over the course of my career, I have garnered several teaching accolades. While upholding an active teaching schedule, I now dedicate a significant amount of time to producing textbooks and course materials. I have authored or co-authored anywhere from seven to twelve textbooks, in addition to various solutions manuals and interactive CD-ROMS. After numerous years as the developmental math coordinator at Miami Hamilton, I share the concern associated with low pass rates in the developmental math curriculum. Far too many students find themselves on the typical Jetson’s-style treadmill, hindered by the abstract nature of the traditional algebra curriculum which obstructs their progress. Like many instructors nationwide, I believe it is time to move beyond the generic curriculum that treats all students alike irrespective of their aspirations, whether they aim to be an engineer or a pastry chef. Maintaining the status quo in our curriculum for the mere reason of “that’s how it has always been done” is unsatisfactory. Let us collaborate to devise alternative pathways that assist students in learning more effectively and efficiently while expediting their transition to credit-bearing math courses. Given that my book (Math in Our World) caters to the Liberal Arts Math and Quantitative Literacy audience, I feel well-positioned to contribute positively in the new and stimulating pathways course. At present, I am content with my teaching career aligning seamlessly with my childhood dream of writing. (Do not inform my publisher – they are under the impression that I spend 20 hours daily working on textbooks – I am currently working on my inaugural novel during the scarce free time I have.) Furthermore, I previously served as the coordinator of Ohio Project NExT, firmly believing in assisting young college instructors in emphasizing high-quality teaching as a primary professional objective. I reside in Fairfield, Ohio with my lovely wife, Cat, and our fluffy dogs, Macleod and Tessa. When not engaged in teaching or writing, my interests include Ohio State football, Cleveland Indians baseball, heavy metal music, travel, golf, and home improvement.

Michael Price is a senior instructor and assistant department head of mathematics at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Both his undergraduate and graduate degrees are from the University of Oregon, where he has served as a graduate student and instructor for the past 9 years. Michael has taught courses in introductory and intermediate algebra, up through precalculus, statistics, and three versions of calculus tailored for biology/human physiology, business/economics, and mathematics/physical science students, respectively. As a coordinator for the precalculus sequence at the U of O and at times other sequences mandatory for non-math majors, Michael devotes a substantial portion of his time to crafting and reinforcing appropriate course content for mathematics service courses. In addition to this textbook, he has contributed to supplementary materials and reviewed undergraduate mathematics texts.
