Author Overview

Kitty O. Locker served as an Associate Professor of English at The Ohio State University, where she conducted courses in workplace discourse and research methodologies. She earned her B.A. from DePauw University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana. She also authored Business and Administrative Communication (sixth ed., Irwin/McGraw-Hill, 2003), The Irwin Business Communication Handbook: Writing and Speaking in Business Courses (1993), and co-edited Conducting Research in Business Communication (1988). Her consulting clients included URS Greiner, Abbott Laboratories, the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, AT&T, and the American Medical Association. In 1994–95, she was the President of the Association for Business Communication (ABC). From 1997 to 2000, she served as the editor of ABC’s Journal of Business Communication. She was awarded ABC’s Outstanding Researcher Award in 1992 and ABC’s Meada Gibbs Outstanding Educator Award in 1998.

Jo Mackiewicz is currently a Professor of Rhetoric and Professional Communication at Iowa State University. Her research has been featured in a variety of publications, including Journal of Business and Technical Communication, Technical Communication Quarterly, IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication and the WAC Journal. Alongside Isabelle Thompson, she co-authored Discuss Writing: The Tutoring Strategies of Experienced Writing Center Tutors. She also authored The Aboutness of Writing Center Talk: A Corpus-Driven and Discourse Analysis and Writing Center Talk over Time: A Blended-Method Analysis. The latter was the recipient of the International Writing Center Association’s 2019 Outstanding Book Award.

 

Donna S. Kienzler is an Emeritus Professor of English at Iowa State University, where she instructed in the Rhetoric and Professional Communication program. As the Director of Advanced Communication, she supervised over 120 sections of business and technical communication annually. She also held the position of Assistant Director at the university’s Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, where she delivered courses, seminars, and workshops on pedagogy; oversaw graduate student programming; and managed the Preparing Future Faculty program, which provided career training for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Her research focused on educational methods and ethical considerations.

Jeanine (Jenny) Elise Aune currently holds the position of Teaching Professor and Director of ISUComm Advanced Communication (AdvComm) program at Iowa State University (ISU). She possesses an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has been instructing writing within the Department of English at Iowa State University since 1999. For 11 years, she served as the Coordinator of ISU’s Learning Community (LC) English links. Her responsibilities included assisting linked discipline faculty in clarifying their expectations for students’ communication skills to English instructors and aiding English instructors in redesigning writing courses to enhance students’ development in these skills. The number of LC-linked English sections more than doubled during her tenure. She has been leading or co-leading the Advanced Communication program since 2011. She collaborated with various stakeholders across campus to construct standardized curricula for the program’s four courses—business communication, proposal and report writing, scientific communication, and technical communication—in both face-to-face and online formats. These four courses are delivered by approximately 40 instructors across about 200 sections, enrolling around 4,800 students each academic year. Most recently, the online business communication course achieved QM certification at 97%, and the online technical communication course garnered a QM certification at 98%.
