Barbara M. Newman (Ph.D., University of Michigan) holds the position of professor emeritus in the Department of Human Progression and Family Studies at the University of Rhode Island. She has also served on the faculty at Russell Sage College and The Ohio State University, where she was the head of the Department of Human Progression and Family Science and the assistant dean for Academic Recruitment and Progression. She has conducted classes on life-span increase, youth, family concepts, and the exploration process. Currently, Dr. Newman is researching the feeling of belonging among college attendees, with a specific interest in students from marginalized communities. She is part of a research squad investigating the escalating sense of determination among students with disabilities. For leisure, Dr. Newman delights in reading, creating projects with her grandkids, strolling along Narragansett Bay and Block Island Sound, and spending quality time with her relatives.
Philip R. Newman (Ph.D., University of Michigan) is an interpersonal psychologist whose studies have centered on the transition into high school as well as on community personality and alienation. Collaborating with Barbara Newman, he has facilitated programs aimed at bringing disadvantaged minority youths into university and investigating the mechanisms involved in their scholastic triumphs. They are joint authors of 13 publications, including a work on the theories of human progression, and various journal articles within the realm of human advancement. Dr. Newman’s current endeavor is producing a publication about how high schools influence the well-being and emotional-social progression of adolescents. He has administered courses in basic psychology, youth, societal psychology, developmental psychology, counseling, and family, school, and community landscapes for growth. He functioned as the head of Research and Analysis for the Young Scholars Initiative at The Ohio State University and as the director of the Human Behavior Curriculum Project for the American Psychological Association. He holds memberships with the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI), and the American Orthopsychiatric Association. He personally educated his three offspring through primary and middle school. For recreation, Dr. Newman indulges in photography, mystery novels, attending musical shows and Broadway performances, and watching professional baseball.
