This third edition has been updated to incorporate latest developments, it presents techniques and analysis approaches for conserving power and reducing operational expenses in residential and commercial buildings. The book delves into the most recent methods for gauging and enhancing power consumption levels, with examples for calculations and a set of Case Studies. It encompasses field testing, power simulation, and retrofit analysis of existing buildings. It scrutinizes subsystems—such as illumination, warming, and cooling—and techniques essential for precise evaluation of them. Auditors, managers, and students of power systems will find this book to be a valuable resource for their work. Explores cutting-edge methods and technologies for reducing power usage in buildings. Introduces contemporary power efficiency strategies and established methodologies for power estimation. Provides calculation illustrations that illustrate the application of the methods described. Analyzes the principal building subsystems: illumination, warming, and air-conditioning. Explores large-scale retrofit evaluation procedures for existing building stocks. Introduces the concept of power productivity to account for the various advantages of power efficiency for buildings. Contains Case Studies to offer readers a practical look at power inspections. Moncef Krarti has extensive experience in designing, testing, and evaluating innovative power efficiency and renewable energy technologies applied to buildings. He completed both an MS and a PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado. Prof. Krarti has overseen various projects in designing energy-efficient buildings equipped with integrated renewable energy systems. He has authored over 3000 technical journals and handbook chapters across diverse fields related to power efficiency, distribution technology, and demand-side management for the built environment. Additionally, he has published numerous books on building energy-efficient systems. Prof. Krarti is a Fellow member of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the largest international professional society. He is the founding editor of the ASME Journal of Sustainable Buildings & Cities Equipment and Systems. Prof. Krarti has taught a variety of different courses related to building energy systems for over 20 years in the USA and overseas. As a professor at the University of Colorado, Prof. Krarti has overseen the research activities of an energy management center at the university with a focus on testing and evaluating the performance of mechanical and electrical systems for residential and commercial buildings. He has also contributed to the establishment of similar energy efficiency facilities in various countries, including Brazil, Mexico, and Tunisia. Additionally, Prof. Krarti has extensive experience in promoting building energy technologies and policies overseas, including the establishment of energy research facilities, development of building energy codes, and provision of energy training programs in multiple countries.
