Laura King pursued her undergraduate studies at Kenyon College, where, being an English major, she declared a second area of study, in psychology, during the second semester of her junior year. She achieved her A.B. in English with distinguished honors and in psychology with excellence in 1986. Laura then pursued postgraduate studies at Michigan State University and the University of California, Davis, achieving her Ph.D. in character psychology in 1991.

Starting her professional journey at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Laura later relocated to the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 2001, where she now serves as a professor. Alongside seminars on personality development, social psychology, and character psychology, she has delivered undergraduate lectures on introductory psychology, fundamentals of personality psychology, and social psychology. During her time at SMU, she was honored with six distinct teaching accolades, including the prestigious “M” award for “consistent excellence” in 1999. Her contributions were further acknowledged at the University of Missouri, where she received the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity in 2004.

Her research, backed by the National Institutes of Mental Health, has examined various themes revolving around the essence of a fulfilling life. Currently serving as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Research in Personality, Laura has also held roles as an associate editor for the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, besides contributing to numerous grant review committees. She has curated and co-curated special segments of the Journal of Personality and the American Psychologist. Outside of academia, Laura is a proficient cook and derives pleasure from music (particularly jazz vocalists and singer-songwriters), gardening, and keeping up with Sam, her 3-year-old son.
