William Hoynes graduated with a BA in history and political science from Tufts University and a PhD in sociology from Boston College. He is a Professor of Sociology at Vassar College, where he teaches introductory sociology as well as courses on media, culture, research methodologies, and social theories. During his tenure at Vassar spanning more than 20 years, Professor Hoynes has served as the head of the Sociology Department and director of both the Media Studies Program and the American Studies Program. Apart from numerous articles in journals and book chapters on public broadcasting in the United States, Professor Hoynes is the author of Public Television for Sale: Media, the Marketplace, and the Public Sphere, a recipient of the Goldsmith Book Prize from the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

David R. Croteau attained a BA in sociology from Brandeis University and a PhD in sociology from Boston College. Over the years, he has educated a diverse array of learners at Boston College, Clark University, Keene State College, and the University of Mary Washington. He is an Associate Professor Emeritus in the Sociology Department at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he taught introductory sociology as well as both undergraduate and graduate courses on theory, methodologies, social stratification, social movements, and media. Additionally, he worked as an e-learning expert in VCU’s Academic Learning Transformation Lab (ALT Lab) aiding faculty in creating online courses.
