   About the Author

   Michael Molloy has devoted his life to the study of spirituality. His interest in religion was sparked by the architecture of temples, mosques, churches, and shrines. Attending ceremonies at these places fostered his passion for religious music and art. During his early postgraduate studies, he focused on the symbolism of clouds and darkness in mystical writings. In his doctoral research, he explored the mystical ideas of Aldous Huxley, who was influenced by Hinduism and Mahayana Buddhism. To delve into this subject, he interviewed Huxley’s wife Laura, her sister, and Huxley’s acquaintances.

    

   Molloy received a grant from the East-West Center in Hawai`i for further studies and earned his doctorate from the University of Hawai`i. During this period, he studied in Japan with Abe Masao in Kyoto and with Sobharani Basu at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. He engaged in Zen meditation at Bushinji in Shikoku and later obtained a certification from the Oomoto School of Traditional Japanese Arts in Kameoka, Japan. He authored the books Encountering the World’s Religious Traditions (McGraw-Hill) and The Christian Experience (Bloomsbury). Currently, he is working on a memoir detailing the religious heritage of his grandparents and parents.

    

   Molloy has taught various courses on philosophy and religion, including World Religions, Asian Philosophies, Western Mysticism, Greek and Roman Philosophy, Ethics, Nietzsche, Religion and the Purpose of Existence, and Indian Philosophy. He holds the title of Professor Emeritus at the University of Hawai`i. In addition to his academic pursuits, he has organized three art exhibitions: “Landscapes of the Mind,” “Luminous Darkness,” and “Renaissance.” He co-hosted two radio programs featuring interviews with musicians, writers, and artists on KAIM-FM and Hawai`i Public Radio. He was involved in the Inari Shrine Preservation Committee, overseeing the shrine’s relocation and subsequent restoration efforts.
