3. Hymie Anisman achieved his doctorate in 1972 (College of Waterloo) and has served as a Professor at Carleton College, Ottawa, since then. Additionally, he holds an adjunct position with the Institute of Psychological Health Research (Royal Ottawa Hospital). Professor Anisman was honored as a Senior Ontario Psychological Health Research Fellow from 1999 to 2006, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He has been a Canada Research Chair in Neuroscience since 2001. The main focus of his research has been the impact of stressors on neurochemical and neuroendocrine systems and how these factors influence psychological (anxiety, depression) and physical (immune-related and neurodegenerative) conditions. His investigations have covered a wide range, from animal models assessing stress-related pathology to human studies evaluating stress, coping mechanisms, and appraisal processes. In his studies, he has explored the long-term effects of chronic stress resulting from discrimination, stigmatization on health, depression, and PTSD in refugees from war-torn regions and among Aboriginal communities who have faced childhood trauma. He has also delved into the distress associated with abusive relationships and life transitions, as well as the transgenerational transmission of trauma effects. Aside from serving on editorial boards of several journals and numerous grant panels, Professor Anisman has authored over 400 peer-reviewed academic papers and book chapters. He has also written several review papers in neuroscience and psychology journals and has edited two books, one focusing on stress processes and the other on psychoneuroimmunology. Furthermore, he has published two books on Stress and Health, one aimed at a academic audience and the other for the general public. His research has been financially supported by institutions such as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Ontario Mental Health Foundation (OMHF), the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), and the Canada Research Chairs program (CRC).
