About the Writer

Neil V. Watson and his laboratory colleagues at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada focus on gender-related aspects of the configuration and operation of the nervous system, with continual funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. His investigations, extending from the impact of hormones and contaminants on the composition of the nervous system to the connections between social elements, cognition, and steroids in humans, have been featured in various publications, including the Journal of Neuroscience, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and Brain Research. Dr. Watson obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Western Ontario and his doctorate from the University of British Columbia. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the faculty at SFU in 1996, where he currently serves as Professor of Behavioral Neurology and Head of Psychology. He instructs biological psychology to numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students annually.

S. Marc Breedlove, the Barnett Rosenberg Professor of Neurology at Michigan State University, has written more than 130 scientific papers exploring the influence of hormones on shaping the developing and adult nervous system, with publications in journals such as Science, Nature, Nature Neuroscience, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. He is also zealous about teaching—both in the classroom and within the broader community through interviews with major publications like the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Newsweek, as well as appearances on broadcast programs such as All Things Considered, Good Morning America, and Sixty Minutes. He receives active funding from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Breedlove is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Psychological Science.
